The US announced visa restrictions today on individuals for their actions surrounding the November 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa State elections for undermining Nigeria democracy.
US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo made this announcement to send a strong warning to individuals that are bent to truncate the Nigerian democracy process.
It will be recalled that In July 2019, US announced imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians who undermined the February and March 2019 elections because those individuals operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and have undermined democratic principles.
Today’s ban is a slap on the wrist by the US Government and waring to those individuals that are bent to truncate democracy process in the run up to the September and October 2020 Edo and Ondo State elections.
According to the public statement from the US Secretary of States, US is committed to working with the Nigerian government to strengthen democratic institutions and processes, and that Nigerians deserve free, fair, transparent & peaceful elections.
